10 things I HATE about YOU is an adaption of William Shakespeare's play, "The Taming of the Shrew". The film starts off with Cameron, a new student to Padua High, sitting in an office of the schools guidance counselor, Mrs. Perky, who doesn't seem to care about the students. Cameron is then shown around by Michael, who soon becomes his best friend. During the tour Cameron gets his first glimpse at Bianca Stratford, a beautiful sophomore who he instantly fills in love with. But the one problem is, she isn't aloud to date, and neither is her sister Kat, a senior who is into punk music and is quite a feminist. Bianca and Kat's father, Walter Stratford, then changes the house rule, Bianca can date when Kat dates. This leads to a situation between Bianca and Kat, as Bianca wants to date but Kat doesn't believe in that kind of social affection. Cameron then decides he is going to date Bianca, but first he must get someone to date Kat. Michael then tricks "pretty boy" Joey Donner into paying Patrick Verona to date Kat, leaving the impression in Joey's mind that he will get Bianca if someone takes out Kat. Patrick is a bad-boy with a mysterious reputation, which is feed with rumors about his past.
Patrick then starts the hard task of getting Kat to date him. Michael and Cameron then approach Patrick, telling him about the whole situation and how they started it all, and they tell him they will help him. Cameron and Bianca then approach into Kat's bedroom, looking through her stuff for information that will help them infiltrate her mind and help Patrick win browny points. They find black underwear - which surprises Bianca as she thinks it means that her sister wants to have a relationship with a boy one day. They also find tickets to a concert playing at a club.
Patrick goes to the concert, where he see's Kat. She seems impressed that he knows the band, but tries to hide it with sarcasm. Michael then starts a party, partly to help Cameron and partly to get revenge at Boogie for kicking him out of the "Future MBA's group". He changes Boogie's invite and then chucks them down the stairs of the school. The party is big, and everybody goes.
Joey then get to Kat, and she drinks a lot of alcohol and gets drunk. Patrick looks after her. Also, Cameron goes to see Bianca, but she ditches him for Joey. He is sad and disappointed. But when Bianca is hanging out with Joey she sees who he is and how he only cares about himself. She then asks Cameron for a lift home. He agrees, and in the car he tells her how selfish she is. The message seems to get to her, and she kisses him. Kat tries to kiss Patrick in the car, but he backs away. She gets upset and leaves him.
The next day people mimic Kat's dancing, and Kat has a grudge against Patrick. Things seem to be going to custard, and Michael and Cameron explain to Patrick how he has humiliated Kat, and how he has embarrassed her. He then pays the band of the school to play a song on the field, and Patrick runs along the bleachers of the field, singing to Kat about how much he loves her.
Patrick then gets a detention, and Kat sneaks in and gets him out of it, distracting the teacher whilst Patrick snuck out the window. The two then went and did some bonding, where they fell for each other. On their way home they discuss all the rumors about them, and what is true and what is lies.
Joey then goes up to Patrick telling him he needs to take Kat to prom, so Bianca can go with Joey. Patrick says he wants out, and Joey raises the price. Reluctantly, Patrick agrees. Cameron then takes Bianca to prom, and Joey turns up at the Stratford's household, asking for Bianca. Walter then shuts the door in his face. At the prom Joey confronts Patrick, saying that he didn't pay him to take out Kat so that Cameron could get with her. Kat leaves Patrick, who feels bad and sad, as he had truly liked Kat.
Joey then confronts Cameron, and talks trash out Bianca. Cameron stands up for himself and Bianca, and Joey pushes him in the face. Bianca then stands up for her sister, Cameron, and herself, and she punches Joey in the face three times. She and Cameron then become a couple.
At school Kat then reads out a poem to the class about how the 10 things she hates about Patrick, but how she still loves him even when he hurts her. Patrick then buys her a guitar with all the money Joey had given him, and the two become a couple.
